Project Summary

Ajani Charles originally shot the images in this series to accompany an article he wrote reflecting on the long-term implications of the COVID-19 pandemic, during the early stages of the pandemic, while living and working in the downtown core of Toronto in 2020.

The photographs served as both documentation and personal inquiry during a moment of global paralysis and uncertainty.

The article was first published on his personal blog before Arianna Huffington, author, syndicated columnist, and entrepreneur, personally invited him to cross-publish it through Thrive Global, the American media and behaviour change platform she founded to support individuals navigating stress, burnout, and systemic disruption.

Focused on practical mental health tools, behavioural shifts, and adaptive habits, the piece resonated strongly with entrepreneurs, executives, and independent operators attempting to stabilize themselves amid unprecedented economic and psychological strain.

The images grounded these ideas in lived experience, capturing a city in suspension.

What began as a single essay has since evolved into a long-term, multidisciplinary project examining the pandemic’s imprint on Toronto and Canada, framed explicitly through the lens of its global impact.

Rather than treating Toronto as an isolated case study, the work situates the city within an interconnected international crisis that reshaped labour, mobility, governance, public health, and social trust worldwide.

The project now encompasses black-and-white photographic series, additional essays, short films, a planned feature-length documentary, and future art exhibitions. Its visual language emphasizes stillness, absence, endurance, and recalibration—qualities that defined urban centers across continents.

With a tentative completion horizon, the project continues to expand in depth and scope, positioning itself not only as a historical record of Toronto during COVID-19 but as part of a broader international archive examining how a global event reconfigured cities, economies, and individual behavior for years to come.
